Design Technologist
Design Technologist is a 2 year higher education programme (120 ECTS Credits)
At KEA design/business we are educating Design Technologists with eight different specialities within the 3 streams Design, Sourcing and Business.
The purpose of the programme is to qualify students to work in the fashion and lifestyle industry. Students acwuire knowledge as well as hands on approach to the various work tasks within their field of expertise.
Design Technologist graduates are able to plan, organise and complete tasks in their chosen field: Design, Sourcing or Business. Furthermore they benefit from their basic comprehension of the other fields.
Focus is on the commercial value of the design product which is implemented in all levels of the design, production and marketing process.
The purpose of the Design stream is to train design technologists who are able to combine the creative with the commercial, who can communicate their ideas and retain a focus on a product, concept or process as well as the stakeholders involved.
Students in the Design stream can specialize in one of 3 areas;
Trend & Design Strategy
Students work with culture analysis, trendspotting and semiotics and transform design research into design strategies, forecasting and trend scenarios. They learn to communicate using design briefs, charts and illustrations.
Fashion Design
Collections are designed based on the values and identity of a brand. Students learn to capture the spirit of the times and to translate it into lifestyle products. They develop their understanding of shape, colour and materials and learn to communicate through drawings and images.
Accessory Design
Products and series are designed based on the values and identity of a brand and the consumers' needs. Students learn to capture the spirit of the times and to translate it into accessories. They develop their understanding of shape, colour and materials and learn to communicate through drawings and images.
The purpose of the Business Stream is to train design technologists who are able to become successful internationally and who are able to combine the analytical aspect with the commercial from a creative angle and possess a detailed knowledge of sales and marketing, purchasing and concept development.
Students in the Business Stream can specialize in one of 3 areas;
Sales & Marketing
The focus is on trade between companies; the business-to-business market. Students learn about personal sales work, service management, media planning, relation marketing and negotiation technique.
Brand Building
Students learn about how companies create an identity through products or concepts - both externally and internally (corporate identity). Furthermore conceptual idea generation, storytelling and web design are part of this specialesation module.
Experience Marketing
Experiences are integrated in all aspects of the company. Students learn about Visual Merchandising and Interior Shop Design (light, room, sound, environment, layout) from a design perspective. PR and various types of events are other commuicative tools.
The purpose of the Sourcing Stream is to educate design technologists who can assess, manage and carry through a production process and engage in professional collaboration across geographical borders.
Students in the Sourcing Stream can specialize in one of 2 areas;
Pattern Design
Pattern Designers are both technicians and designers and therefore an important link between the design and the production process. Students learn about product requirements and materials and how to ploan and control the various technical processes.
Sourcing
Companies must build up and maintain a close contact to suppliers and manufactureres all over the world. Students learn to handle purchases of fabrics of the right quality and price and simultaneously communicate with the manufacturer of your styles using samples, sketches and words.
